2021 Oceanside Museum of Art / Oceanside, CA / Solo Show

Images from ‘Divisions’ my November 2021 solo exhibit at the Oceanside Museum of Art. This work in this exhibit explored how figures and abstract forms interact with one another, the spaces they inhabit, and the materials from which they are formed. I attempt to portray the body as both a tangible thing and a place of universal experience. Faceless, silent poses represent the body as a physical yet elusive place. Divisions within and between bodies suggest psychological and emotional states, human relationships, and the connections and disconnections which lie beneath the physical surface.

The following images catalog my participation in a residency and exhibition titled "Art Rally: Koumi, Japan". (residency June 15 - July 1, 2017 / exhibition July 1 -  August 20). 16 sets of my cast concrete sculpture 'Face to Face’ ,24" x 24" x 26", were made. Two sets were displayed at the Koumi Machi Museum of Art and the other 14 were placed at sites all around the town of Koumi. Max Lofano, who at the time was a student working on his art degree at San Diego State, helped me produce the concrete castings and install the work at the various sites throughout the town of Koumi. I made the fiberglass molds used to cast them in San Diego before the residency. The materials, sand, cement, and gravel used to make them were obtained in Japan.

Four fiberglass molds were created before going to Japan. They were used to cast the concrete sculptures during the two week residency. I am applying oil to a mold in this photo.

The sculptures were made hollow inside so that they would be easier to move. Each half of the finished artworks still weighed roughly 100 pounds.
